Managing Challenging Behaviour Without Punitive Approaches

This workshop introduces non-punitive approaches grounded in connection, clear boundaries and understanding — practical for busy settings, and consistent with current thinking on early childhood behaviour support.

- Does this mean there are no consequences for behaviour?
- No, boundaries and consequences still exist — the difference is that they are natural, logical and connected to the situation rather than designed to shame or punish. We cover exactly how to hold these calmly.
- Will this work for children who are used to sticker charts and reward systems?
- Yes, though the transition is covered in the session, as children may need a period of adjustment when a setting moves away from reward-based systems toward intrinsic motivation.
- How do we get the whole team consistent on this approach?
- The booklet includes a team discussion guide specifically for this, and many settings book this as a full staff session to build that consistency from day one.
- Is time-out ever appropriate?
- The session distinguishes between a punitive time-out used to isolate a child and a supported calm space a child chooses to use, which are very different in intent and impact.
